May 31, 2022

Australia is home to a myriad of nutritional native superfoods that have been used as food and medicine for many thousands of years by First Nations people. In present days, these native food sources are the subject of renewed interest due to their incredible nutritional qualities and flavour profiles.

Native Australian plants are unique because they are perfectly suited to our often harsh climate and environment and will grow and thrive naturally without the use of pesticide’s, irrigation or intervention.  This is not only better for the health of our environment, but of course, better for those of us who consume these ingredients.

Native Australian plants are jam packed with nutritional benefits. Studies have confirmed high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties in such concentrated quantities that well surpass other introduced fruit and plant species

Here’s our top 5 Australian natives to try

1. Kakadu Plum

Found naturally in open woodland across Northern Australia, namely in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.  The Kakadu plum (also known as Gubinge) contains the highest concentration of vitamin C in the world! For example, an orange contains 53mg of vitamin C and a Kakadu plum contains a whopping 2907mg!

A subtropical rainforest plant, the fingerlime contains a powerful punch of citrus flavour in the form of hundreds of caviar like citrus pearls. The pearls hold their shape until you pierce them and they burst in your mouth, guaranteeing a mouthwatering juice explosion With high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, particularly Folate, Potassium and Vitamin C, this fruit is fun, citrusy, tart and tangy all at once.
