If you’re wondering how to make a margarita, it’s even easier with pre-made mixes from Ms Sans (but more on that in a minute). Say goodbye to sugar-induced hangovers and hello to your new favourite Friday afternoon drink.
Where did margarita come from?
Plot twist: Nobody really knows for sure. There are a few origin stories floating around, but the earliest claim seems to date back to Tijuana, Mexico in 1938. A restaurant owner, Carlos “Danny” Herrera, said he invented the drink for a dancer who went to the venue a lot, Marjorie King. Miss Marjorie didn’t like any other liquor besides tequila, but she didn’t like drinking it neat, either. Herrera had to get creative — he added lime juice and salt, and supposedly made the first margarita.
Meet Ms Sans — your destination for ready-made mixes
If you’re toying with the idea of reducing your alcohol intake or going alcohol-free completely, you’ve probably come across a lot of non-alcoholic mixers that are packed with sugar and other low-quality ingredients. Not anymore!
I launched Sans Drinks in 2020 because I was frustrated with the alcohol-free options available to me once I’d stopped drinking alcohol. I wanted to whip up mocktails that tasted great and wouldn’t send me for a ride on the blood sugar rollercoaster. So, I created a range of non-alcoholic spirits and ready-to-drink premixed cocktails.
When I set about making Ms Sans, my own range of mocktail mixes, margaritas were at the top of my list. The Ms Sans Margarita is exclusive to Sans Drinks, and not to toot my own horn but it’s the perfect pre-mixed margarita mocktail. Like the other Ms Sans pre-mixed non-alcoholic cocktails, this one was created to directly replace the original marg that’s so popular. This version blends premium margarita ingredients, including alcohol-free tequila and triple sec with Tahitian lime juice, orange syrup and a pinch of sea salt. Made right here in Australia, it contains no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, so it's a fabulous, low-calorie option.
You can drink it as is over ice, but here are some of my fav non-alcoholic margarita mocktails when you’re in the mood for a fancy bev.
1. Classic Margarita Mocktail
If you want to keep things simple, you can’t go past the classic margarita recipe. With my own non-alcoholic tequila and triple sec mix plus lashings of lime, this margarita mocktail is the perfect mix of tart and sweet.
Ingredients
- 120ml Ms Sans Margarita
- Ice
- Salt (to rim)
- Lime wheel (to serve)
Method
Pour the Ms Sans Margarita into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a salt-rimmed martini glass, and garnish with a lime wheel before serving.
2. Spicy Margarita Mocktail
Do you sprinkle chilli flakes or add hot sauce to everything? Then you’ll love this spicy margarita mocktail. A spin on the classic, it’s got a little kick thanks to the jalapeños. Feel free to add more — if you dare!
Ingredients
- 120ml Ms Sans Margarita
- 2 thinly sliced jalapeño coins and more to garnish
- Ice
- Salt (to rim)
- Lime wheel (to serve)
Method
Remove the seeds from 2 jalapeño coins, then muddle them in a cocktail shaker. Add a handful of ice, plus the Ms Sans Margarita mix. Shake well. Strain into a salt-rimmed martini glass or tumbler, and add the lime and more jalapeño coins to garnish.
Pro tip
Keep the spicy theme going by rimming your glass with chilli salt.
3. Margarita Champagne Mocktail
Can’t choose between a marg and a glass of bubbly? You don’t have to! This margarita champagne mocktail is the best of both worlds. I personally like a generous splash of non-alcoholic sparkling wine to round out my mocktail, but you can jazz yours up with as much or as little chardy as you like.
Ingredients
- 90ml Ms Sans Margarita
- Next Destination 2021 Langhorne Creek Blanc de Blanc (to taste)
- Salt (to rim)
- Lime (to serve)
Method
Pour the Ms Sans Margarita mix into a salt-rimmed champagne flute. Top with non-alcoholic sparkling wine. Garnish with a lime wheel to serve.
Pro tip
Chill your non-alcoholic sparkling for at least 20 minutes before making this easy non-alcoholic margarita. It really helps to bring out the bubbles!
4. Frozen Margarita Mocktail
Whenever I whip up this frozen margarita mocktail, I think of the slushies I used to love as a kid. This grown-up version tastes just like the classic marg, and trust me when I say there’s nothing better on a balmy summer’s night! Heads up that you’ll need a blender for this frozen margarita recipe.
Ingredients
- 120ml Ms Sans Margarita
- Ice (to blend)
- Salt (to rim)
- Lime (to garnish)
Method
Blend the margarita mix with a cup of ice. Add more ice to taste. Pour into a salt-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel, then serve.
5. Italian Aperitif Margarita Mocktail
Pretend you’re having a Euro summer with this alcohol-free take on the iconic Italian aperitif. Think of an Aperol Spritz, combined with a burst of citrus and the flavours of a classic marg. It’s delish and best enjoyed with a few nibbles and followed up with a siesta.
Ingredients
- 80ml Ms Sans Margarita
- 40ml Sans Bar Spritzing In Venice
- Ice
- Blood orange (to serve)
Method
Add the non-alcoholic spirit mixes to a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice. Shake well. Strain into a salt-rimmed old fashioned glass, and garnish with a slice or two of blood orange.
