Chilly evenings call for the yummiest, warmest and most comforting drink — mulled hot chocolate made with the richness of red wine and the indulgence of creamy dark chocolate. It’s the perfect winter warmer that’s hard not to obsess over. Try this alcohol-free mulled hot chocolate recipe whenever you need a cosy pick-me-up.
Ingredients
-
300 ml non-alcoholic red wine (a Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect choice, such as Two Hoots Non-Alc Cabernet Sauvignon)
-
150 g dark chocolate chips or dark chocolate
-
1/4 cup cocoa powder
-
1 cinnamon stick
-
2 star anise
-
4 cloves
-
6 allspice berries
-
2 tbsp demerara sugar
-
500 ml whole milk
Method
-
Pour the non-alcoholic Cabernet Sauvignon (Two Hoots Non-Alc Cabernet Sauvignon) into a pan over low heat. Add all the spices — cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, and allspice berries — along with 2 tablespoons of demerara sugar (or more to taste). Gently heat the mixture and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
-
Meanwhile, in another pan, start heating the milk over low heat. Gradually whisk in the cocoa powder and dark chocolate as the milk warms up. Continue stirring until the chocolate melts and forms a smooth, consistent mixture.
-
Once ready, strain the spice-infused non-alcoholic red wine into the chocolate mixture. Stir generously until everything is well combined.
-
Your mulled hot chocolate is now ready to serve! Pour it into small glasses or cups, garnish with an extra cinnamon stick as a stirrer, or top with whipped cream or marshmallows for an indulgent finish. Enjoy it hot!
